One night after a concert at FSU, I was introduced to a smiling brunette who pretended to be interested in me. She didn't have to be....we lived many hours apart, so we had every excuse to go about living our lives without each other. But the miles didn't stop us. For whatever reason, she chose to be with me.
One rainy Saturday morning in Dallas, I asked a very important question to that very important person, and she said "Yes." She didn't have to, but she chose me!
Minutes after we were married, after the whole church had cleared and Roomie (my college roommate) was bringing the car around for us, I gathered my belongings from the back of the church and sauntered down the hall towards the door - excited, anxious, and exhausted. Just as I approached the door, I turned to my right, and there she was...sitting all alone on the stairs with that same excited but exhausted look on her face. A beautiful girl in a beautiful white wedding dress, sitting on the stairs, with an empty church in the background and a quiet peace around her. When I looked at her, she looked at me, and we said "Hey!" as if to say "Hey, you, the person I just decided to spend the rest of my life with...how's it going so far?" And there's no one else I'd rather have seen on those steps that day. She chose me!
Apparently, when you graduate from law school, you get "hooded." And AA gets to select who "hoods" her. I assumed it would be a favorite professor or dean. But she chose me! I'm honored and thrilled. It's just another way that "we're in this together."
These past 3 years in particular have required teamwork. The bills, the errands, the condo, the 723 whole square feet, the renovations, the baby, the doctor visits, the traffic, the sleep deprivation, the workload, the commutes, the worry, the relief, the celebrations, the job changes, living in one of the most expensive cities on a single income, daycare, bedrest, exams, the real estate roller coaster, Culver City animal control, the hour-long drives to Chick-fil-A, the decisions, the planning.... Hooding AA will be the feather in the cap of what has been a challenging and rewarding journey that required teamwork, and it means a lot to me that she chose me.
I've always told AA, "It's you and me against the world." I don't mean to be adversarial. I just mean that when you consider the number of people and things in the world trying to take a piece of you (as noted above), we have to stick together.
She chose me!
That was so sweet!
ReplyDeleteAwww!!! That is awesome!! Great choice !!- mandy
ReplyDeleteBA, you have a way of expressing the sweetest, dearest comments, about those you love, that endears you to all of us who know you and AA. I have known AA a few years myself, and I can rightfully say that you and she have both chosen wisely and well. Now quit gazing dreamingly into each others eyes, and get back to sending pictures of Leah!
ReplyDeleteIf I wasn't in our new downtown library, I'd start crying tears of joy at your poetry, BA; I'm so happy for both or the three of you for the challenging success you've all experienced and shared w/us. Thanx. I saw Haley in there to, that is Haley Annie. gma
